I want to quote a passage of Robert Blashke`s book on relationship astrology (which I cannot recommend highly enough; it`s been in my posession for over 10 years now, and I find I am going back to it again and again and still learning new things from it!)
He states that in his experience not all synastric aspects are active simultaneously with the same strength and that most are dormant until activated. This activation can happen through holographic transits.
"It links any current progressed aspects or Transit influences affecting either individual in a relationship with the synastric aspects between them. If, for example, the man`s Saturn is conjunct the woman`s Mars, the aspect is only activated, when either of the two individuals has Transit Saturn aspecting their natal Mars or transiting Mars aspecting natal Saturn, or if either has progressed Mars aspecting natal Saturn"
(Blashke, Astrology a language of live - Volume IV Relationship analysis, p.107)
While of course there are other ways that synastric aspects might be activated or pulled into the foreground (one of the major signs to describe this is their angularity, and especially if becoming angular by progression - and also if the pr Moon temporarily highlights certain synastric aspects, either natal synastry or progressed synastry, as the pr Moon acts like a flashlight, illumination certain spots, of course for just a short while, about 3 months, the pr angles or even pr Sun activating planets usually have a timeframe of about 2-3 years, in which these aspects are VERY much in the foreground, though there is some waxing and waning time outside this timeframe involved.).
But anyway for now just focusing on what Blashke wrote here - I think it describes a practical approach to what many astrologers call "the natal promise".
Remember how in almost every astrology book or article the natal promise is mentioned, and they are saying that you can only experience something that is in some way written into your lifescript, your chart?
Most of those astrologers, as I find, avoid to defining however what a natal promise is and more importantly HOW it can be activated.
That theory of Blashke is one technique to figure that out, I think.
In my own mind I´ve always called this "mirroring" or "resonance" instead of holographic transits, but it doesn`t matter how it is called.
What it really means is that something external (a transit most of the times) triggers a certain personal issue or figure and "brings it out". Progressions and transits through that resonance-effect seem to describe the time when that natal promise (or sometimes threat ) is ripe for expression and manifestation.
Curiously I haven`t really tried it out with synastry, though I did notice that in terms of individual charts, natal, progressed, transit), that those double and triple whammies that pick up upon a natal aspects somehow have a much stronger effect than many other transits, even though we think they should have more effect. They are also sometimes putting you in a vulnerable place, because they touch a pretty personal part of yourself, and not always one you wnat to have brought onto display all of the times.
For example for me this was the case in the summer of 2012, which proved to be a quite kathartic summer.
Natally I have Venus on 6 Capricorn square Pluto on 9 Libra
That august there was:
pr Pluto on 9 Libra in partile square with pr ASC on 8 Capricorn, which had been going over my natal Venus on 6 Cap the 2 years before
While the pr ASC-nVenus was too wide at that time, it is interesting that prASC was exactly squaring Pluto, and hence bringing it to the foreground and Pluto of course is always tagging my Venus along, though in this instance the emphasis was more on Pluto with a small dose of Venus
That week I have in mind
Tr Pluto was on 7 Capricorn rx, re-applying to my nVenus and still in orb of course for conjunct my prASC and squaring my Pluto (it had been going back and forth in between conjunct Venus and squaring Pluto, and most of the time the most noteable events or phases happened when Tr Pluto was pretty close to the midpoint of the Venus and Pluto degrees for me, so around 8 degree of cardinal)
What made this particular week stand out possibly also had to do with Tr Venus (a quick moving one of course) being on about 5-8 Cancer during those days, and hence, there was a
Venus-Pluto-square in the transits
that mirrored my
natal Venus-Pluto-square
plus
Tr Pluto was conjunct my Venus and square my Pluto, and hence triggering this one
and the pr ASC was just another factor to push it into the limelight.
It is interesting that the Transiting Venus-Pluto-square was actually aspecting my natal Venus-Pluto-square; for a holographic transit that does not always have to be the case, at least in terms of synastric aspects.
BAck then the week was also interesting because of my prMoon being exactly opposing my natal Sun, and on the day I am talking about, Tr Moon was falling onto my pr Moon exact. (Tr Sun was also opposing my natal Moon - so a transiting Double whammy, mirroring the Sun-Moon-progression I had)
Hmm I guess now I will just have to check some relationship "phases" and their holographic transits for that time.
